What Members Can Do to Help Protect Their Identity
Protect your account numbers, card numbers PINs (personal identification numbers), and passwords. In particular, never keep your PIN with your debit card or credit card, as that makes you vulnerable in the event you lose your card or your card is stolen. Use caution in revealing account numbers, social security numbers, etc. to other persons. In particular, if a caller tells you he/she is calling on behalf of the credit union and asks for your account number, you should beware. Legitimate credit union staff would already have access to that information. It’s important that the credit union has current information about how to reach you. If we detect potentially fraudulent use of your account, we will attempt to contact you immediately. If your address or phone number changes, please let us know.
Protecting Children
We do not knowingly solicit or collect data from children and we do not knowingly market to children online. We recognize that protecting children’s identities and online privacy is important and that responsibility rests with us and with parents.
Security Statement
Maine Savings Online brings together a combination of industry-approved security technologies to protect data for the credit union and for you, our member. It features password-controlled system entry, a VeriSign-issued Digital ID for the credit union’s server, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol for data encryption, and a router and a firewall to regulate the inflow and outflow of server traffic.
Secure Access and Verifying User Authenticity
To begin a session with the credit union’s server the user must key in a Log-in ID and a password. Our system, Maine Savings Online, uses a “3 strikes and you’re out” lock-out mechanism to deter users from repeated login attempts. After three unsuccessful login attempts, the system locks the user out requiring a phone call to the credit union to verify identity in order to reset the password before re-entry into the system. Upon successful login, the Digital ID from VeriSign, the experts in digital identification certificates, authenticates the user’s identity and establishes a secure session with that visitor.
Secure Data Transfer
Once the server session is established, the user and the server are in a secured environment. Because the server has been certified as a 128-bit secure server by VeriSign, data traveling between the user and the server is encrypted with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. With SSL, data that travels between the credit union and customer is encrypted and can only be decrypted with the public and private key pair. In short, the credit union’s server issues a public key to the end user’s browser and creates a temporary private key. These two keys are the only combination possible for that session. When the session is complete, the keys expire and the whole process starts over when a new end user makes a server session.
Employee Security Standards
Maine Savings Federal Credit Union maintains information standards and procedures that include physical and electronic safeguards, restricting access to employees on a need-to-know basis, and training employees on the importance of information security.
Router and Firewall
Requests must filter through a router and firewall before they are permitted to reach the server. A router and a firewall, both pieces of hardware, work in conjunction to block and direct traffic coming to the server. The configuration begins by disallowing ALL traffic and then opens holes only when necessary to process acceptable data requests, such as retrieving web pages or sending customer requests to the credit union.
Using the above technologies, your online banking transactions are secure.
