Security

Your personal information is a valuable asset that must be protected and handled with care. We always keep your privacy and security top-of-mind, but there are everyday practices that you should follow, too!

Protect Yourself from Fraud

Scammers may call, text, or email you to try to get personal information like your Social Security number or your account numbers. They may tell you you’ve won a prize or a trip and they need to verify these numbers for you to get your prize. They may claim you have prize winnings (or something else) that they’ll send you a check for – but beware, that check looks real but it’s a fake! There are many other ways scammers will try to talk you into giving out your information. The easiest way to protect yourself is simply never give your personal information – especially Social Security numbers or account numbers.

Maine Savings will NEVER call, text, or email you to ask you for your Social Security number, account number, debit card number, or any other sensitive information. But remember, when YOU call US, we will ask for additional information to verify who you are!

Identity Theft

Identity theft is a crime where a thief steals your personal information, such as your full name or Social Security number, to commit fraud. The identity thief can use your information to fraudulently apply for credit cards, file taxes, or get medical services. These acts can damage your credit status, and cost you time and money to restore your good name. You may not know that you are the victim of identity theft until you experience a financial consequence (mystery bills, credit collections, denied loans) down the road from actions that the thief has taken with your stolen identity.

Online Banking Security

Maine Savings is committed to protecting your information, especially in terms of cybersecurity and Online Banking. We use state-of-the-art encryption technology to secure your Online Banking connection, but be sure to keep your browser and other computer software up-to-date on your end as well to ensure the most secure connection possible.

You can also take additional steps to keep your account secure:

  • Don’t give personal information to others, including user names, passwords, social security number, or date of birth.
  • When possible create difficult passwords which include letters, numbers, and symbols.
  • Don’t use personal information for your user names or passwords such as birth dates or social security number. These types of user names and passwords are easier for criminals to guess.
  • Avoid using public computers to access your online banking.
  • Don’t give any of your personal information to any websites that do not use encryption or other secure methods to protect it.

Mobile Banking Security

While in many ways similar to Online Banking, Mobile Banking presents some unique security issues. Malware is a major threat as mobile devices have few antivirus options. Users should be aware that downloading apps of unknown or suspect origin could compromise their mobile devices and login credentials. Users are advised to download apps from the official app store of their device.
